Exploring European solutions for modernizing the Agricultural Research and Education Center

The Technical University of Moldova (UTM) aims to identify the best solutions for the efficient use of the 570 hectares of agricultural land, in line with European practices, in order to enhance their utilization for academic, research, and commercial purposes.

The Faculty of Agricultural, Forestry and Environmental Sciences (FAFES) within UTM, which uses the Center’s resources in its academic programs, seeks to strengthen the role of the Agricultural Research and Extension in the practical training of specialists in the agricultural sector and in the professional development of students. At the same time, harnessing the Center’s potential will contribute to the development of the research sector, thereby laying the foundation for a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership between education, science, and the agri-food industry.

In this context, the German-Moldovan Agricultural Policy Dialogue (APD Moldova) supported the UTM by evaluating the potential of the Agricultural Research and Extension Center and to formulate recommendations for optimizing its use and maximizing the results it can generate.

The support was provided through APD expert, Dr. Dirk Augustin, Head of the Experimental Teaching Farm of the University of Göttingen, Germany, who manages over 1,200 ha of agricultural land and uses it efficiently for academic and research purposes. This Center operates under an economically autonomous model within the University. The expert from the APD project analysed the current situation of the Center, assessed existing practices and technical-material equipment, using as reference the German model as well as other similar models from the EU. Research and extension stations play an essential role in connecting education, research, and agricultural practice by developing and adapting new technologies, investigating local and global issues affecting agriculture, and providing an educational platform that contributes to increased agricultural productivity, sustainability, and rural development.

Transforming UTM’s Agricultural Research and Extension Center into an integrated platform combining research, education, and production activities will contribute to the sustainable development of Moldovan agriculture. The demonstration plots established within the station will have significant educational value for the more than 600 students enrolled at the FAFES and will also play an extension role, as the results of the research conducted here will be accessible to farmers and entrepreneurs seeking practical information and recommendations based on direct field observations.
